Holidays in Siena - Tourist information about Siena
City known to the world as one of most beautiful and picturesque italian cities. Remained virtually unchanged since the Middle Ages to the present, it has a historical, artistic, and cultural landscape that has no equal. Included among the World Heritage Sites by UNESCO, is located in the center of Tuscany in the valley created by the rivers Arbia, Merse and Elsa. The origins of Siena date back to the Etruscans but the most splendid period occurred between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Once it become a free town, in 1147, the city began a great expansionist campaign aimed to the conquest of neighboring territories. Soon came the clash with rival expansion of Florence, the struggle lasted for several centuries until 1555 when Siena had to surrender because of the long siege of Florence. Much of the life of the town center revolves around Piazza del Campo, the shell-shaped town square where the Palio is held. Around it are collected the Palazzo Comunale (City Hall) built between 1298 and 1310 to which was later added the Torre del Mangia and marble Chapel, the monumental Fonte Gaia and many other master palaces. On the back there is the Loggia della Mercanzia. The main citizen place of worship is represented by Piazza del Duomo in which is in fact the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta. The church is elevated above the square thanks to some steps and inside are sculptures signed Michelangelo, Donatello, Pisano and paintings by Pinturicchio. To impress and amaze the audience the imposing and elegant marble facade is enough but the masterpieces collected within deserve at least a visit. The city is the headquarters of Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena in business since 1472 which makes it the oldest and longest running in the world. Many traditional dishes and sweets are still consumed today: ribollita, pici, panforte, ricciarelli and of course the Chianti wine produced in large quantities throughout the province.|Siena
