Holidays in Pisa - Tourist information about Pisa
Pisa stands a few km from the mouth of river Arno in a flat area called Lower Valdarno, to the north the plain is enclosed by Monti Pisani. Founded as etruscan became later a roman city, his marine vocation was already very strong at the time. In the Middle Ages this tendency became even more pronounced, Pisa helped the Crusaders bringing them supplies by sea and with the concessions obtained developed some colonies in the Mediterranean sea. After this period of great splendor Pisa began its decline with the defeat in the naval battle of Meloria against Genoa, historical opponent. Later the city was conquered by Florence and remained under its control until the unification of Italy. With several riots the Pisans tried to regain power but in 1500 had to surrender. Among the most beautiful and important city monuments is the famous Piazza del Duomo, better known as the Piazza dei Miracoli, where there is the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, built between 1063 and 1092 of white and colored marble according to the particular romanesque pisan style. Next to it there is one of the three leaning towers of the city: the bell tower of the twelfth century, 56 meters high, the building tilted 10 years after a land subsidence. The Baptistery, the largest in Italy, dedicated to St. John the Baptist dating from the twelfth century and the monumental graveyard at the northern edge of the square. The other two towers, not far away, are the bell tower of St. Nicholas Church and the one of Church of St. Michael degli Scalzi. Many are the bridges crossing Arno, the villas and the renaissance palaces. Pisa is surrounded by walls preserved almost untouched except for some stretches south and west. Interesting along the way are the many gates to the city center. Education and culture are very developed in Pisa, is in fact home to three of the most important educational facilities in Europe: the University of Pisa, the Scuola Normale Superiore, the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna.|Pisa
