Holidays in pitigliano in province of grosseto
Pitigliano is located in the western part of the tuff area on a high cliff surrounded on three sides by deep ravines. In the valley flow the rivers Lente, Meleta and Prochio. Already in the etruscan period in the high tuff walls had been dug many caves used as dwellings and tombs, and also on the top of the ridge there was a settlement of that popolation. In medieval times the lands of Pitigliano belonged to Aldobrandeschi, then with the marriage of Margherita Adlobrandeschi and Romano Orsini there was a transfer of power. The Orsini dominated for many of the following centuries, until 1574 when the fort was cedeed to the Medici. The florentine family lost interest in the city so that it fell in decline until the arrival of Lorraine. Pitigliano is placed among the most beautiful villages in Italy, the houses are built right on the edge of the spur of tufa rock in order to make almost suprflue the defensive walls. Parts of the walls can still be found around the old town and are still visible two gates, Porta di Sovana and the Porta della Cittadella. Attractions no to be missed in a visit to Pitigliano are the Cathedral of Santi Pietro and Paolo dating from the Middle Ages in late baroque style whose bell tower has kept, at the top, the facade of tufa. The Orsini palace built as a convent but remodeled several times until the Orsini endowed it with architectural particulars typical of the renaissance, consists of a deck, two towers, a main tower and a courtyard. Today it is seat of the Diocesan Museum. Pitigliano is also known as Little Jerusalem because of the presence of the great Jewish community that settled here in the fifteenth century. In the Jewish ghetto you can visit the synagogue and cemetery. The ground tuff of the area give life to a prized production of wine that is the famous Bianco di Pitigliano one of the first to be recognized as DOC. Some caves dug into the tufa rock are used as cellars for this wine.|Pitigliano
