Monterotondo is located on top of an almost circular shaped hill that inspired the name of the town. In its territory converge the borders of three provinces: Pisa, Livorno and Grosseto. The country was born in medieval times as a possession of the abbey of nearby Monteverdi Marittimo. Initially dominated by theAlberti family , during the '200 came under the control of Massa Marittima until, to his fall, was incorporated in the Republic of Siena. In the middle of the '500 became part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. Monterotondo still retains the typical urban structure of a small medieval town, walking through the narrow alleys the atmosphere is that of a distant past of a fortified village.
