Holidays in monterotondo marittimo in province of grosseto
Monterotondo is located on top of an almost circular shaped hill that inspired the name of the town. In its territory converge the borders of three provinces: Pisa, Livorno and Grosseto. The country was born in medieval times as a possession of the abbey of nearby Monteverdi Marittimo. Initially dominated by theAlberti family , during the '200 came under the control of Massa Marittima until, to his fall, was incorporated in the Republic of Siena. In the middle of the '500 became part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. Monterotondo still retains the typical urban structure of a small medieval town, walking through the narrow alleys the atmosphere is that of a distant past of a fortified village. The town has preserved some ruins of the ancient Rocca degli Alberti and also the surroundings are rich in architecture of the past. Along the ridge of the mountain is the Church of Santa Croce built in romanesque-gothic style and the remains of the Castle of Cugnano, an archaeological site of great importance. Monterotondo, surrounded by chestnut, has not known a tourist development of large proportions although it offers a wonderful panoramic landscape on the Colline Metallifere and the unique spectacle of geysers, lakes fed by hot springs and other geothermal phenomena visible inside the Parco delle Biancane. The name is due to the white color of the rocks scattered in the park. In it there is also the Lake Cerchiaio from which is extract the boric acid used today in famraceutica and cosmetics industry, these waters were considered therapeutic for various diseases of the skin and of the joints by the Etruscans.|"Monterotondo Marittimo"
