Located in the province of Grosseto on low hills that hardly exceed 300-350 m above sea level. Overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea for a short stretch mostly rocky, the only exception is the sandy beach of Cala di Forno. The excavations in town have uncovered traces of ancient etruscan settlements, particularly relevant are the necropolis of Heba (Magliano Etruscan name) and the so-called Disk of Magliano whose discovery, which occurred in 800, helped to codify the etruscan language. The old town is enclosed entirely by walls built initially by the Aldobrandeschi family, lords of Grosseto, and then improved by Siena after the conquest of the city. The walls, along with the gates of the city, has come down to us almost intact and faithfull to the original and has recently been the subject of a very accurate restoration. Characteristic are also the localities of Montiano and Pereta, small villages dating back to medieval times, who have maintained part of the ancient protective walls. Walking in the center of the town you can admire the Church of San Giovanni Battista, built during the renaissance in gothic style. Palazzo del Podestà built in the '400 and the Palazzo di Checco il Bello dating back to late Middle Ages, it once was the private residence of the family Monaldeschi of Orvieto. Not far there are two medieval towers of land sighting (Torre Bassa and Torre della Bella Marsilia) and also one of the few coastal towers still standing, the Tower of Cala di Forno. Finally, the Monastery of S. Bruzio built around 1000 by Benedictine monks but of which remain only the ruins. In the area are grown mostly olive trees and vines, from this is obtained the Morellino di Scansano red wine that can proudly vaunt the D.O.C label.|"Magliano in Toscana"
