The name means little Florence and was suggested by the historian Giovanni Villani, who also planned his coat of arms. It's located in the province of the Tuscan capital but on the romagna side of the Apennines. Among the most characteristic towns of the Alto Mugello is nestled in the woods of the Apennines and in its vicinity are some gorges where the river Saterno flows. Its foundation is due to the Republic of Florence around 1300 and was intended to limit the power of the ghibellines family of the Ubaldini, powerful feudal lords of the Apennines, controlling the road that linked Florence to Bologna. The town was established at the time of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany and made part of it, except for a brief period when it was controlled by the town of Modigliana, until the unification of Italy. In World War II, Firenzuola, was hard hit by the conflict because of its proximity to the Gothic Line where were fighting Germans and allies. The city, whose emigration process had already started in the '30s, was abandoned therefore further. Today are still admrable Porta Fiorentina and Porta Bolognese, parts of the defensive walls erected around the castle, dating back to the founding of the city. On the main square there is instead the Church of San Giovanni Battista, built in 1959 on the ruins of the old church destroyed by bombing during the war. Characterized by modern and simple lines outside and inside. At Firenzuola there are the Museum of Pietra Serena, a sandstone used especially in tuscans architecture and sculpture especially in Florence, and the Museum of the historical landscape of the Apennines.|Firenzuola
