With about 103,000 inhabitants, this chief town is situated at the confluence of three of the four valleys that make up the province. The surrounding area is very wide and varied, ranging from the plain overlooking the Val di Chiana and the river Arno to the hills to the south and the mountains to the east. Known as one of the major etruscan cities, conquered by the Romans in the third century became one of the first strongholds north of the empire. The Lombards who conquered the city stated the foundations of the medieval Arezzo. Around the year 1000 became a powerful aoutonomous municipality, the power was administered by the bishop of the city who was the first in Italy who began to use the title of Count. Arezzo was acquiring more and more power and prestige so that Florence and Siena, to even the importance, challenged it in the battle of Campaldino from which the city was defeated. So in 1348 Arezzo was annexed to the domains of Florence until the fall of the Medici family and the subsequent creation of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, which then joined to the rest of country in the Unity of Italy in 1860. The historic center and the most beautiful spots of the city were used as location in several italian films as an evidence of its beauty. In particular, it's not to be missed the magnificent gothic Cathedral, placed on top of the hill, that houses the tomb of Pope Gregory X and a fresco of the Renaissance painter Piero della Francesca. In front of the Cathedral there are the Giardini del Prato and beside it the Fortezza Medicea, an ancient fortification built by the florentines which is now a public park offering a wonderful view. Nearby is also Piazza Grande (or Piazza Vasari, from the name of the arcade Vasari), the oldest square of the city and recognized as one of the most beautiful in Italy. The main source of income of the city in the first postwar period were agriculture and breeding of Chianina cattle, together with the trade of goods in the four valleys. After World War II Arezzo, thanks to its geographical position, placed himself at the center of the gold district of the region. In recent years, the tourism sector of the city is evolving significantly, but has not come to express his full potential yet.|Arezzo
